Why Do Students Need Help With GCSE Chemistry?
GCSE Chemistry combines a lot of facts, abstract ideas and calculations, which makes it hard for many students. It is also the gateway to A Level Chemistry, Biology and Medicine, and to many science and healthcare careers.
A 1-to-1 tutor simplifies complex ideas, shows how to balance equations and tackle moles calculations, and fixes the exact topics your child finds confusing, instead of repeating the same homework.
Where students usually lose marks
- Balancing equations by changing the small numbers instead of the big ones
- Moles, concentration and percentage yield calculations
- Mixing up ionic, covalent and metallic bonding and their properties
- Vague answers on 6-mark extended response questions
- Weak knowledge of the required practicals and the tests for ions and gases
- Panic and poor timing in exams
Challenges Parents Commonly Face Before Finding the Right Tutor
Many families come to us with the same worries. Our tutoring plans are built to solve them.
"There is just too much to remember"
Chemistry has a lot of content. Tutors turn it into clear patterns, such as trends in the periodic table, so there is less to memorise blindly.
"The school can't give individual attention"
In a busy classroom, gaps go unnoticed. One-to-one lessons find and fix exactly where your child is stuck.
"The exams are coming and we're panicking"
Whether exams are months away or weeks away, a structured revision plan helps your child prepare calmly and use time well.
"They struggle with moles calculations"
Many chemistry marks come from maths. We practise formula mass, moles and concentration step by step until it feels natural.
"They understand it in class but fail tests"
Exam technique is a skill. We practise timed questions, command words and extended answers so knowledge turns into marks.
"Good tutors are hard to find"
We match your child with a suitable chemistry tutor, offer flexible times and give a free trial so you can decide with confidence.

Foundation vs Higher Tier and the Exam Papers
GCSE Chemistry is split into Foundation tier (grades 1 to 5) and Higher tier (grades 4 to 9). Students usually sit two written papers. Here is how the main boards compare.
| Exam board | Papers | Time per paper | Marks per paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| AQA (8462) | 2 papers | 1 hr 45 min | 100 |
| Edexcel (1CH0) | 2 papers | 1 hr 45 min | 100 |
| OCR Gateway (J248) | 2 papers | 1 hr 45 min | 90 |
Always check your exam board's current specification for exact details. Cambridge IGCSE follows its own structure, and Combined Science differs from separate Chemistry. Your tutor will work from your child's specification.
What a Typical GCSE Chemistry Lesson Looks Like
Every tutor plans around your child, but most sessions follow a clear pattern so progress is steady and easy to see.

Feedback and homework
Clear notes on what went well and what to practise before the next lesson.
How We Plan Year 10 and Year 11
Year 10: Build the Foundations
Learn each topic properly, strengthen the maths skills chemistry needs, and practise a wide range of question types. End-of-year mocks show the current grade and what to improve.
Year 11: Revise and Perform
Work through full past papers, revise every topic and required practical, and target the questions that carry the most marks right up to exam day.
A Worked GCSE Chemistry Example, Step by Step
Most calculation questions give credit for the method as well as the final answer. This is the pattern our tutors teach in every lesson.
Question 1: Moles
Calculate the number of moles in 50 g of calcium carbonate, CaCO3. (Relative atomic masses: Ca = 40, C = 12, O = 16)
- Find the relative formula mass: 40 + 12 + (3 × 16) = 100
- Write the equation: moles = mass ÷ relative formula mass
- Substitute and answer with the unit: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5 mol
Question 2: Balancing an equation
Balance this equation: Mg + O2 → MgO
- Count the atoms: there are 2 oxygen atoms on the left but only 1 on the right
- Balance the oxygen: put a 2 in front of MgO, which gives 2 magnesium on the right
- Balance the magnesium: put a 2 in front of Mg to get 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO
In a typical mark scheme each stage can earn credit, so showing the formula mass and the equation protects marks even if the final calculation slips. Exact mark allocation depends on the question and the exam board.
Common mistakes that cost marks
- Changing the small subscript numbers when balancing, instead of the big numbers in front
- Adding up the relative formula mass wrongly, for example forgetting to multiply by the number of atoms
- Forgetting to convert cm³ to dm³ in concentration calculations
- Saying covalent substances melt because the bonds break, instead of explaining weak forces between molecules
- Giving no unit, or leaving out state symbols when they are asked for
- Skipping the working and writing only a final number
Core Equations Our Tutors Practise, by Topic
| Topic | Equation | Unit of the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Chemistry | moles = mass ÷ relative formula mass | mol |
| Quantitative Chemistry | concentration = mass of solute ÷ volume | g/dm³ |
| Quantitative Chemistry | percentage yield = actual yield ÷ theoretical yield × 100 | % |
| Quantitative Chemistry | atom economy = Mr of desired product ÷ Mr of all reactants × 100 | % |
| Rates of Reaction | mean rate = quantity of product formed (or reactant used) ÷ time | depends on the quantity |
| Chemical Analysis | Rf = distance moved by substance ÷ distance moved by solvent | no unit |
Which equations you must memorise, and which are given in the exam, depends on your exam board and tier. Your tutor checks the current specification with you.
6 Ways to Raise Your GCSE Chemistry Grade
These are the habits our tutors build with students, and parents can encourage at home.
1. Practise balancing equations
Do a few every day, including state symbols and ionic equations if you are on Higher tier.
2. Master the mole
Moles underpin most calculations. Write the equation, substitute, then give the answer with its unit.
3. Learn the tests
Know the flame tests, gas tests and ion tests with the exact observations, using flashcards.
4. Revise the required practicals
Know the method, the variables, the risks and how to evaluate results for each one.
5. Practise 6-mark questions
Plan your answer, link ideas in a clear order and use the correct scientific words.
6. Learn from mistakes
Keep an error log. Redo wrong questions a week later. This is where the biggest improvements come from.

Common Questions About GCSE Chemistry Tutoring
Pricing depends on the number of lessons per week and the plan you choose. Every new student can book a free trial class first, so you can meet the tutor and check the fit before paying anything. Call us or book a trial and we will explain the current options.
Our tutors teach AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry for both Foundation and Higher tier. Tell us your child's board and we match a tutor who knows that specification.
Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5 and Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9. The school usually decides which tier a student is entered for. Higher papers include harder calculations and more demanding extended answers, and tutors prepare your child for whichever tier they are sitting.
Many students find it demanding because it mixes abstract ideas, a lot of facts and calculations such as moles. The marks follow clear patterns though, such as balancing equations carefully and showing every step of a calculation. Tutors teach those patterns and fix the specific topics that confuse your child.
Yes. Separate GCSE Chemistry is its own qualification, while in Combined Science chemistry is one part of a course that also covers biology and physics, with fewer chemistry topics. Tell us which course your child is entered for and the tutor will teach that content.
Yes. Tutors use exam-style questions and past papers for your child's board, then go through the mark scheme so your child learns what examiners reward.
Yes. Calculations such as relative formula mass, moles, concentration and percentage yield are a big source of lost marks. Tutors practise them step by step, including rearranging equations and converting units.
Yes. Tutors go through the required practicals, such as making salts, titration, electrolysis, rates of reaction and chromatography, including method, variables, results and evaluation, because these ideas are tested in the written exams.
Yes. You can book a free trial class to meet a tutor and see how lessons work, with no obligation.
Yes. Tell us and we will arrange a different tutor. The free trial class is there so you can check the teaching style suits your child before you continue.
It can be. Live video lessons with a shared whiteboard let the tutor see your child's working in real time, check balanced equations and calculations as they are written, and give instant feedback. Learning from home also saves travel time.
Most students start with one lesson a week and add another as exams get closer or if they need extra support. Starting in Year 10 gives the most time to fill gaps, but Year 11 revision lessons also help. We offer after-school, evening and weekend slots to fit around school and clubs.
