Why Do Students Need Help With GCSE Biology?
GCSE Biology has a large amount of content, and the exams reward precise scientific wording as well as understanding. It is also the gateway to A Level Biology, Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Science and many other careers.
A 1-to-1 tutor breaks big topics into clear steps, shows how to answer in the way examiners expect, and fixes the exact topics your child finds confusing, instead of repeating the same homework.
Where students usually lose marks
- Mixing up similar processes such as diffusion, osmosis and active transport
- Vague wording instead of precise key terms
- Confusing genotype and phenotype in genetics questions
- Calculations such as magnification and percentage change
- Weak knowledge of the required practicals and data questions
- Rushed 6-mark answers and poor timing in exams
Challenges Parents Commonly Face Before Finding the Right Tutor
Many families come to us with the same worries. Our tutoring plans are built to solve them.
"There is just too much to remember"
Biology has a lot of content. Tutors turn it into clear connections, such as how structure links to function, so there is less to memorise blindly.
"The school can't give individual attention"
In a busy classroom, gaps go unnoticed. One-to-one lessons find and fix exactly where your child is stuck.
"The exams are coming and we're panicking"
Whether exams are months away or weeks away, a structured revision plan helps your child prepare calmly and use time well.
"They mix up similar topics"
Processes like respiration and photosynthesis, or mitosis and meiosis, get confused. We compare them side by side until the differences are clear.
"They understand it in class but fail tests"
Exam technique is a skill. We practise timed questions, command words and extended answers so knowledge turns into marks.
"Good tutors are hard to find"
We match your child with a suitable biology tutor, offer flexible times and give a free trial so you can decide with confidence.

Foundation vs Higher Tier and the Exam Papers
GCSE Biology is split into Foundation tier (grades 1 to 5) and Higher tier (grades 4 to 9). Students usually sit two written papers. Here is how the main boards compare.
| Exam board | Papers | Time per paper | Marks per paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| AQA (8461) | 2 papers | 1 hr 45 min | 100 |
| Edexcel (1BI0) | 2 papers | 1 hr 45 min | 100 |
| OCR Gateway (J247) | 2 papers | 1 hr 45 min | 90 |
Always check your exam board's current specification for exact details. WJEC, Eduqas and Cambridge IGCSE follow their own structures, and Combined Science differs from separate Biology. Your tutor will work from your child's specification.
What a Typical GCSE Biology Lesson Looks Like
Every tutor plans around your child, but most sessions follow a clear pattern so progress is steady and easy to see.
Quick warm-up
A few recall questions on last week's topic, key terms and homework.
Teach the concept
The tutor explains one topic clearly using the whiteboard, labelled diagrams and worked examples.
Guided practice
Your child tries questions with hints, so mistakes are caught straight away.
Exam-style questions
Timed questions in the style of your exam board, including data questions and 6-mark answers.
Feedback and homework
Clear notes on what went well and what to practise before the next lesson.
How We Plan Year 10 and Year 11
Year 10: Build the Foundations
Learn each topic properly, build the key vocabulary, and practise a wide range of question types. End-of-year mocks show the current grade and what to improve.
Year 11: Revise and Perform
Work through full past papers, revise every topic and required practical, and target the questions that carry the most marks right up to exam day.
A Worked GCSE Biology Example, Step by Step
Most calculation and genetics questions give credit for the method as well as the final answer. This is the pattern our tutors teach in every lesson.
Question 1: Magnification
A drawing of a cell is 45 mm long. The real cell is 0.03 mm long. Calculate the magnification.
- Check the units match: both lengths are in mm
- Write the equation: magnification = image size รท real size
- Substitute and answer: 45 รท 0.03 = ร1500
Question 2: Genetic cross
Two heterozygous tall pea plants (Tt) are crossed. What is the probability of a short plant (tt)?
- Write the parent genotypes: Tt ร Tt
- Draw the Punnett square: the offspring are TT, Tt, Tt and tt
- State the probability: 1 in 4, or 25%, are short (tt)
In a typical mark scheme each stage can earn credit, so writing the equation, the genotypes and the square protects marks even if the final step slips. Exact mark allocation depends on the question and the exam board.
Common mistakes that cost marks
- Mixing units in magnification, for example mm and ยตm, without converting
- Saying an enzyme "dies" instead of explaining that it is denatured
- Saying respiration "makes" energy instead of releasing it for the cell to use
- Mixing up genotype (the alleles) and phenotype (the observable feature)
- Describing a graph without using numbers from the data
- Skipping the working and writing only a final answer
Core Equations Our Tutors Practise, by Topic
| Topic | Equation | Unit or form of answer |
|---|---|---|
| Cell Biology | magnification = image size รท real size | no unit (ร) |
| Cell Biology (osmosis) | percentage change = (final mass โ initial mass) รท initial mass ร 100 | % |
| Bioenergetics | photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water โ glucose + oxygen | word and symbol equation |
| Bioenergetics | aerobic respiration: glucose + oxygen โ carbon dioxide + water | word and symbol equation |
| Ecology | population estimate = mean number per quadrat ร (total area รท quadrat area) | number of organisms |
Which equations you must memorise, and which are given in the exam, depends on your exam board and tier. Your tutor checks the current specification with you.
6 Ways to Raise Your GCSE Biology Grade
These are the habits our tutors build with students, and parents can encourage at home.
1. Learn key terms precisely
Examiners reward exact words such as denatured, partially permeable and active site. Use flashcards and short daily recall.
2. Draw and label from memory
Practise the heart, nephron, neurone, plant cell and food web until you can draw them without notes.
3. Practise the calculations
Magnification, percentage change and Punnett squares come up often. Write the equation, substitute, then give the answer.
4. Revise the required practicals
Know the method, the variables, the risks and how to evaluate results for each one.
5. Practise 6-mark questions
Plan your answer, link ideas in a clear order and use the correct scientific words.
6. Learn from mistakes
Keep an error log. Redo wrong questions a week later. This is where the biggest improvements come from.

Common Questions About GCSE Biology Tutoring
Pricing depends on the number of lessons per week and the plan you choose. Every new student can book a free trial class first, so you can meet the tutor and check the fit before paying anything. Call us or book a trial and we will explain the current options.
Our tutors teach AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and Eduqas, and Cambridge IGCSE Biology for both Foundation and Higher tier. Tell us your child's board and we match a tutor who knows that specification.
Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5 and Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9. The school usually decides which tier a student is entered for. Higher papers include harder questions and more demanding extended answers, and tutors prepare your child for whichever tier they are sitting.
Many students find it demanding because there is a lot of content and the exams reward precise scientific wording. The marks follow clear patterns though, such as using the correct key terms and linking cause to effect. Tutors teach those patterns and fix the specific topics that confuse your child.
Yes. Separate GCSE Biology is its own qualification, while in Combined Science biology is one part of a course that also covers chemistry and physics, with fewer biology topics. Tell us which course your child is entered for and the tutor will teach that content.
IGCSE is an international qualification with its own syllabus and exam structure, so some topics, papers and question styles differ from UK GCSE. Tell us which one your child is taking and the tutor will work from that specification.
Yes. Tutors use exam-style questions and past papers for your child's board, then go through the mark scheme so your child learns what examiners reward.
Yes. Questions on magnification, percentage change, rates and reading graphs carry real marks. Tutors practise them step by step, including units and how to describe trends using numbers from the data.
Yes. Tutors go through the required practicals, such as microscopy, osmosis, food tests, enzymes, photosynthesis and reaction time, including method, variables, results and evaluation, because these ideas are tested in the written exams.
Yes to both. You can book a free trial class to meet a tutor with no obligation. If the teaching style is not the right fit, tell us and we will arrange a different tutor.
It can be. Live video lessons with a shared whiteboard let the tutor draw and label diagrams with your child, check answers as they are written, and give instant feedback. Learning from home also saves travel time.
Most students start with one lesson a week and add another as exams get closer or if they need extra support. Starting in Year 10 gives the most time to fill gaps, but Year 11 revision lessons also help. We offer after-school, evening and weekend slots to fit around school and clubs.
